Clevedon Pilot Gig Club follows in the wake of the many seafarers who plied their trades on waterways around the south west racing out to meet merchant trade vessels and guide them through the treacherous waterways of the South West Coast to safe harbour.
The gig, a 32ft wooden rowing boat, would be powered by 6 rowers with the first gig to ‘win the race’ to the incoming trade vessel getting the contract for it’s steerage to harbour
Gig racing is now one of the most popular and fastest growing water sports in the south west with a great regatta season during the summer months.
Our first boat Watch and Pray was built at the Underfall Yard in Bristol and launched on March 5th 2011.
We purchased our second gig, renamed Blackbird in early 2012 and have since added to the fleet with a training flash boat and a wooden training gig named Odessa (which has since been sold to the newly formed Portishead Pilot Gig Club), and three fibreglass gigs named Churngold and Ladye Bay and Finzel.
We are actively looking for people to join us, if you have any questions please fill in the contact form and our membership secretary will get back to you and explain the process.
