World Pilot Gig Championships 2016 - Isles of Scilly

Date:
Friday, 6 May, 2016

This has been Clevedon Gig club's most successful and happiest Scillies yet.

Thanks to the Super Vets and Vets in this ever growing category for kicking off the racing (in choppy water as usual) you rowed your hearts out and produced results to be proud of. Ladies Supers 13th from 25, beating the likes of Barnstaple & Torridge. Men's Supers 16th from 32 & Men's Vets 14th from 36.

A massive well done to Ladies A for a club record and highest placement ever of a Clevedon team. Ranked 30 in the world!! That's bloody brilliant, and won a heat to move up to group C.

Congratulations to Ladies C for winning a heat and going up a group when it really mattered. The race was fantastic to watch. 118 overall.

And not forgetting Ladies B who fought neck and neck with Lyme Regis for first place in the final heat. It was only David Harris who thought they had it. It was an absolite pleasure to watch you and the whole club celebrate when we found out. Highest podium winners for Clevedon. Placed 49 top of heat E (also beating Falmouth B on the way!)

All the mens teams raced well.

Mens C, who win the record for the gig with the most novice rowers in, had some super heats and rowed long and strong to finish in group H placed at 96. Great result.

Mens B,coxed by Sister Sarah Harris, finished 4th in group G placing 76th overall. They raced their hearts out and had some epic battles. Their Karaoke skills were second to none. Air guitar/ knitting will go down in history.

Mens A raced hard and strong all weekend and ended in heat E. The wonder woman tutus really empowered the men in their last race as the spectators will vouch for as the men picked off the boats in front of them to end 50th in the world.

It was amazing to be part of such a wonderful event with a happy and fun club. The spirit of Clevedon gig club shone through. You should all be proud of the part you played in making this the most successful championships yet.

Let this be the start of a successful regatta season for the club.

Thanks to everyone in the club for all their great efforts.
