On Saturday 26th July 24 rowers, plus supporters, from Clevedon Pilot Gig Club travelled south to Rame Pilot Gig Club Regatta. Having attended last year, but not rowed due to a last minute cancellation, anticipation was rife at the opportunity to compete with some of the top crews in the country. To add to this, it was set to be a scorcher with calm waters. Luckily Rame didn’t disappoint!

Standout performances on the day were from Men’s B coming 6th out of 17 crews, and Men’s Vets coming 5th out of 13 crews. Three members of our U14 crew, teamed up with three girls from Rame to race as well. They put in a sterling effort in only their second ever race, achieving a respectable 6th out of 7 crews.

Friendly local rivalry was present with Clevedon going head to head with Bristol in several races, Clevedon often coming out on top!

Clevedon also provided an umpire for the afternoon. Sarah C learnt lots from the resident umpiring experts and will be telling us all about it via e-mail soon!

As the afternoon of racing due to a close many tired Clevedon rowers retired to the sea for a leisurely swim in preparation for a ‘bit of a do’ in the gig shed, and fireworks, later.

Although there were sadly no wins for Clevedon they did what they do best, and rowed with a competitive and determined edge against the best crews around. Rame regatta is fast becoming a firm favourite with several Clevedon rowers, and with clear blue skies, highly competitive racing and a party with fireworks in the evening, it’s clear to see why!
